This liberal arts college was established on June 24, 1794 by charter from the Massachusetts General Court (Maine being part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts at the time). The college honored James Bowdoin III, and was built in 1802 with four buildings and a faculty of six men.
From 1820-1829, the 260 graduates may have been the most illustrious of an American college in any ten-year period. Among them were to become 49 clergymen, 22 teachers, 106 lawyers, 35 physicians, six U.S. Senators, a Secretary of the Treasury and Franklin Pierce, the 14th President of the United States. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Nathaniel Hawthorne were also among these famous graduates.
